Such a common household item such as a tea set could be easily be overlooked as a work of art, though its presence is such a dominate element in our daily routines, we tend to question its history and origins. A work of art such as a ceramic teacup’s value is greatly enhanced after a story or process is revealed. Sentimental value and attachments to these objects are generated over time; their presences trigger intimate feelings and fond memories.
Michiyo Miyai is a master ceramic potter from Kyoto, Japan and COLONY 2139 was fortunate enough to commission her to produce a series of handmade, ceramic goods that are available in all COLONY 2139 stores. By documenting Michiyo Miyai’s beautiful craft with still photography and film we invite you to bring home not only a work of art, but also an in-depth story of its origins and journey from the magical countryside of Kyoto.
